Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Christian Medical College, Ludhiana was established in the year 1891 by Dr. Edith Brown. It is a center of excellence for patient care, education and research in the country. It provides OPD, operative, and emergency care apart from teaching and research obligations. The department teaches seventy-five undergraduate students every year. Regular teaching classes are held for students and practical aspects are taught to them by postings inwards, labor room, and operation theatres. The students are expected to work up the cases allotted to them, to discuss them with the residents and faculty, observe and assist in the surgeries and follow up the patients till discharge. The importance is given to the practical training of undergraduate as well as postgraduate students. Eight postgraduate students are enrolled in obstetrics and gynecology every year. During their three year stay in the department, the students learn the management of all cases General obstetrics, gynecology, high-risk pregnancy, infertility, oncology, fetal medicine, and endoscopy. The department also has special clinics in infertility, oncology, high-risk pregnancy and Gynae endocrinology (Menopausal and Adolescent Clinic). The department has an obstetric high dependency unit (HDU) for sick pregnant patients and a shared Institutional ICU for patients requiring intensive care. Keeping up with the spirit of teaching and research along with patient care, the department regularly organizes conferences and workshops in various subspecialties. Many members of the faculty are examiners to various universities, National Board of Examinations, IGNOU. As a part of commitment towards the National Family Planning program, the department has an active family planning unit which offers all the modalities of reversible and permanent methods of contraception. The Department also has an active role in the management of the Comprehensive Rural Health Centre at Hambrah and Bilga.
