Welcome to the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PMR), Christian Medical College, Ludhiana (Punjab) which was started in 2008. Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation is a branch of modern (allopathic) system of medicine. Rehabilitation team includes a Physiatrist (PMR) as a team leader, Rehab nurse, Physiotherapist, Occupational therapist, Speech Therapist, Psychologist, Prosthetist and Orthotist, Social Worker, Vocational Counselor, Peer counselor, etc. Patients and their relatives are also part of rehabilitation team and involved in treatment goal setting. PMR specialty emphasizes on prevention, diagnosis and treatment of patients who experience limitations in function resulting from any disease process, injury or symptom. The goal is to restore optimal function in all spheres of life including surgical, medical (physical, mental, psychological domains), social, emotional and vocational dimensions. Since 2010, Christian Medical College and Hospital, Ludhiana has been involved in operating children who are physically challenged under the Project SarvaSikshaAbhayan (SSA). The Department has successfully operated more than 750 cases of deformity correction and tendon releases and also did rehabilitation of more than 2500 physically challenged children conservatively. Their complete assessment is done by a team of professionals, after which potential children undergo deformity correction surgically. Subsequently these children shifted to Hambran Rehabilitation center (a unit of CMC Hospital) for 8-10 weeks of intense Physiotherapy and Occupational therapy after which they are able to walk independently with or without orthosis and perform activities of daily living in order to make life better for both patients and parents.
Department of PMR focuses on restoring abilities of a person after injury or condition. The team comprises of a Physiatrist (PMR) as a team leader, Rehab nurse, Physiotherapist, Occupational therapist, Speech Therapist, Psychologist, Prosthetist and Orthotist, Social Worker, Vocational Counsellor and a Peer counsellor. Whole team works together and treats a patient with a holistic approach. Patients with any deformity of upper and lower limbs, paralysis, low back pain, low IQ (neurological, musculoskeletal, haematological, plastic surgery and paediatrics conditions) are treated. Various treatment methods provided here includes multiple soft tissue reconstruction, serial casting, CIC training followed by physiotherapy, occupational therapy and other special therapies and treatment. Patient is made self-dependent without or with the help of various assistive devices or aids. The focus of the treatment is inclusion of the patient in the society which is done by remediating or compensating various skills that leads to participation in various occupations like work, play or leisure.
